a busy weekend

It was a busy few days this weekend. Started off early with a nice trip down to the Wedegewood Hotel here in Vancouver to interview Eddy and Axel Merckx for Canadian Cyclist.

Nothing like sitting in the same room with the Greatest Cyclist of All Times.

the greatest cyclist of all times

Only a few local media types were there. Jonathan Fowlie was on hand for Velonews, Rich (aka "the Pez") from PezCyclingnews.com was also there. He had his nifty iPod with microphone recording the proceedings, but apparently it died. So my piece from Canadian Cyclist ran on Pez today.

So that pretty much wrapped up Friday afternoon. I was pretty excited when I got back to the office and went through my pictures. I only took 90 or so with Greg's Canon 20D on loan for the event. I tried to do the equipment justice, honestly.

Then Saturday morning, camera back in the hands of its rightful owner, I raced the Jericho Cyclocross Classic. The same Wedgewood gang who'd thrown the Merckx dinner the night before, now wound up at 8:00 AM doing sign-on at a cold and damp (but not raining) Jericho beach.

As this was home-course, our Tuesday night stomping grounds, and where I practice most, I had a good feeling. My goal going into the race was to crack the top 10 in the Men's B group. And that's just what I did. I ended up 9th / 35. My best effort of the season.

I rode hard, managed to get onto the lead group with a big effort on the second or third lap, and stuck it out until the finish. Cross is a bit easier when you're with the leaders, believe it or not. It ceases to become time-trialing in the dirt and starts to be a real bike race. That was enough for a few KM more per hour.

All of the spectators were out and a lot of pics got taken. We even wound up in the Vancouver Province on Sunday (well, Pinner did).

And of course we're all eagerly awaiting Ryan's video that he took of the event. The unsteadicam makes it's return after his spectactular film-making debut at Vanier.
