yacht stalking: the Attessa

[Note: Looking for information about the Attessa yacht? Go here: Yacht Spotting: The Attessa (August 2005) or read below to see where it traveled from August 2005 to December 2006]

What better thing to do on December 31st than to look through your web analytics for the year and see what people are reading on your website?

Well, no surprise here. While I'd like to think some of my lengthier posts about design or cycling or books or whatever are being read the most, they're not. No, the page with the most reads (10,000 page views / 27,000 page views total in the last 12 months) is the yacht spotting page I put up about the Attessa. Over 101 comments later, its managed to become the number one Google hit for the term (as of this post at any rate).

And the extraordinary thing that's happened is that people started logging where it was. I honestly had no clue about the yacht-spotting community when I put my post up about the boat. I was simply interested in who owned that giant megayacht with a helicopter that had been parked in English Bay here in Vancouver.

But thanks to a global network of internet savvy yacht spotters, I have tracked the last 16 or so months of Attessa activity in a Google Earth KMZ file. All based on comments from this blog.

the voyage of the attessa

The ship has been in some pretty nice places. Last update was in October of 2006 and it was parked in one of my all-time favourite spots, the harbour at Palma off the island of Mallorca, Spain. I was there in 2003 and can confirm that this yacht fits right in with the crowd of boats that you find there...

The shorthand version of the journey, which started in Sept 2005 is this:
Vancouver, San Francisco, Marina Del Ray, Long Beach, San Diego, Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, Panama Canal, British Virgin Islands, Saint Maarten, Madeira Island, Monte Carlo, Malta, Croatia, Venice, Croatia, Malta, and finally Mallorca.

After 101 comments on the site, the trail has gone quiet. Although I'm sure after this post I'll get some more updates...

Here's to user-generated content, high-tech yacht stalking, and a phenomena that only could happen with the help of the internet.

Update: I just found the yachtspotter.com homepage for the Attessa and it looks like it's on its way back to the Pacific... last spotted at Christmas in Saint Maarten. So my map is somewhat incomplete, but charts the points along the way that people contributed to the comments on the original article.

  • I saw the Attessa in San Diego Bay Harbor on 5-7-07 while on vacation. Everyone was in awe of it but didn't know who it belonged to so I decided to check it out when I got back home. It is beautiful!

  • Yep this is the yacht I saw from my wee boat anchored in Deep Cove yesterday evening , the 30th of June , 2007. I was heading up the Indian Arm , looked toward Deep Cove and pretty much thought a condo had sprung up overnight in the middle of the cove.

Not so - it was the Attessa. God bless the super , super rich - the ones that know how to spend it anyway...

  • She is currently back in Long Beach, CA...Shoreline/downtown marina, dock A...Quiet impressive as this dock normally has 50-75 ft. yachts; however, Attessa just towers over them...Will try to get a pic tomorrow(11/24/07)

  • I worked on the Attessa. I am still in AWE. She is beautiful and maintained like a Goddess. Because of her I have a forever love to the yachting world and with dreams of being a owner of my very own M.Y. someday.

  • i have spotted the Attessa today on the 30th of December in Cabo San Lucas and am looking at it right now. We are staying in a house right next to the Palmilla One & Only and they have parked in the cove right outside. We took out our binaculars and have spotted a ton of staff on the boat, a couple older men, 2 younger looking men and two younger brunette girls. Very fun!

  • Hi Gordon, we just left Cabo San Lucas, Jan. 19,2008 while on a cruise ship, as she was just off the beach near the harbor. Quite impressive. The crew were washing the massive black hull.
Also several large yachts inside of the harbor. We now know where some of the rich and famous hang out.

  • Indeedy...the M/V Attessa is still alive adn well in beautifull Banderas Bay. When the cruise ships are not in it is often moored in the harbor on the ship wharf...when they are in, she is sometimes on hook just outside the marina, but I have seen her at anchor at Punta Mita many times. Good luck keeping track of her, and I intend to check back from time to time, as I imagine they'll be moving out of the PV area soon, to either get north or south of the hurricane season.

  • I too, spotted the Attessa III in Cabo San Lucas. I traced its ownership by the helicopter registration number. I was totally amazed to find that I actually knew the owner....well sort of. About 20 years ago I ran into Dennis Washington while visiting his flight department in Missoula, Montanna. We talked airplanes for a while. Then he offered me a ride to San Francisco (I was heading that way, anyway). We sat together on his Gulfstream business jet, drinking beer, chatting for about 2 hours. All I can say, from my brief encounter with him is that he is a really nice guy, very down to earth. I feel pretty honored to have rubbed shoulders with him, albeit very briefly.

  • Today (September 11, 2008) Attessa is anchored off Hamilton Cove to the West of Avalon CA, Catalina island. Took outstanding photos of her from our balcony which is located very close by with my D300 and a 200 mm VR lens. That's a very nice vessel I must say, and we get some beauties out this way. Everything from Paul Allen's super yacht Octopus to 'The World' luxury residential cruise ship some years.

  • Attessa is moored in Marina Del Rey Oct. 3 & 4 2008. Might still be there. Gorgeous yacht!

  • The Attessa is still at the Marina Del Rey Gas Dock. There are rumors going around that it is for sale? It is also rumored that Dennis Washington is building a larger version model that is 305 feet long. Go Dennis Go. You deserve the fruits of your success. Enjoy life to it's fullest.
