spring series 2006 begins

Signs of spring include the cherry blossoms here in Vancouver, the flowers poking up through the lawns, RRSP deadlines and tax season, and of course, something that we look forward to a bit more, the return of the road cycling season.

Team Escape Velocity kicks off the road season every year in BC with the Devo/Escape Velocity Spring Series, our big fundraiser for the youth development program that has succeeded in developing talent like Cam Evans and the wunder-cycling-siblings Marsh and Naomi Cooper to name a few.

Over 240 riders showed up for the 3 category (A/B/C) event at River Road today, a pancake flat course that allows most riders to be carried along in the enormous drafts produced by the packs sometimes as large as 100 riders.

Not having had the greatest start to my 2006 training campaign, I opted for the "easy" route of racing in the B category today, which consists of Cat 3/4 cyclists for the most part. We did 13 laps / 85km in 2:15 or thereabouts, averaging about 38kmh.

Looking at my data from last year's season-opener, which was a stunning 16 degrees and sunny and where I rode in the A Group (Cat 1/2/3), we did 111km in 2:34, averaging 43kmh. Quite a bit faster last year in some ideal conditions. Interestingly, my HR zone data would indicate I had an easier time of it last year in the A Group, even though it was going 5kmh faster. Which just points out the obvious fact I'm not in the best shape right now...

So with a stiff headwind and some solid rain it wasn't the fastest race we've ever done, but fun to be out on the roads of Langley once again.
