velodrome racing in november hurts

More pics from Greg at the race can be found on Canadian Cyclist.
Managed to compete in all three days of the kick-off to the winter season at the Burnaby Velodrome, Canada's only indoor velodrome and one of two indoor tracks in North America (the second being the ADT Centre in Los Angeles). And of which, I'm the Vice President. After being Race Director for BC Provincial Champs last June and the BVC #3 event last May, it was time I got back on the bike and mixed it up. BVC #1 was well attended by lots of National Team types and some fast rides were put in -- two records were broken, including a whopping 10.83 flying 200m from Travis Smith [this year's Olympic gold medal winning time in the sprints was 10.74 from Ryan Bayley - during the sprints, mind you.]
And lots of mixing it up there were. After playing host to more than 3 events without any incidents (someone falling off their rollers here and there while warming up), we had several major crashes in all three categories. The worst being in the Points Race in the B Group, which took down 5 of 18 total competitors and which I wound up winning after a lengthy delay and restart. Lapped the pack twice. Very satisfying.
The legs and lungs seemed willing, the head less so, as the pack seemed downright dodgy at first. Things did get better and a bit more tame as the weekend progressed. Wound up 4th in the B Omnium, threw down some hard attacks, and hopefully gave Mandy a good warmup for her departure to Los Angeles for the upcoming Track World Cup, where she'll be racing for the Canadian National Team.
Now, of course, I'm screwed. Chest full of stuff, swolen throat, headache, feverish... Nothing like beating the crap out of your immune system all weekend by doing max efforts roughly every 45 minutes, 10 hrs/day for 2 days.

My Polar 720i does these great graphs. This is from the feature Scratch Race - 60 laps around the 200m track: 12km of max effort at 45kmh to 59kmh. Pretty much sums it up.
I'm going to bed to sleep for 12 hrs.

Thanks Pipkey. Problem was, racing in the A Group meant competing against national calibre track guys like Marsh Cooper, Zach Bell, Bob Veroba, and some guy from Quebec named Martin Gilbert who finished 10th in the Scratch Race at the World Championships last year in Australia.
Maybe in January I'll step up to the line and duke it out with the big boys.
